Plastic types are identified by a series of cryptic markers as follows:
#1 PETE or PET (Polyethyleneterephthalate)
PET is used to make soft drinks bottles as well as X-ray film, Photographic film, video tapes, tire cord, etc. PET is better known as POLYESTER which is widely used in fibres and textiles.

Wellman International Limited In Cavan recycles about 4 Million PET bottles a day.

#2 HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
HDPE is the plastic used to make milk bottles, detergent and shampoo bottles toys houseware. Most milk bottles are translucent (natural) i.e. they contain no colouring pigment or pigmented bottles such as detergent bottles can only be recycled into black products . HDPE is one of the commonest plastics.

#4 LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)
LDPE is similar to HDPE but as the name suggests less dense and more flexible. As a result it is widely used for the manufacture of the ubiquitous plastic shopping bags as well as bin liners, cling film and other everyday products. A variation is Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE).
